Martha M. Horstman was born on March 3, 1902 in Wright County, Iowa, the daughter of Christian Henry and Minnie Marie Seifert Horstman. She attended Morgan Township Country School. She was united in marriage to Fred D. Mensing on March 9, 1921 in Hampton, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Dows and Belmond area for many years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Dows, the Ladies Aide, The Pythian Sisters and the Royal Neighbors.

Martha M. Mensing died Thursday (October 29, 1998) at the Dows Care Center at the age of 96.

Survivors include a daughter, Marie and husband Jack Gilmore of Alden; one son, Keith Mensing, Des Moines; 9 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister, Carolyn Jacobson of Dows and a daughter-in-law, Jean Mensing of Dows.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Fred; three sons: Beryl, Dick and Kenneth; three sisters: Bertha Rockow, Augusta Woodson and Esther Horstman and four brothers: Henry, William, Albert and Arthur.

Funeral services were held Monday (November 2, 1998) at the First Presbyterian Church in Dows. Burial was held in the Fairview Cemetery in Dows.

Elledge Funeral Home of Dows was in charge of arrangements.
