Jean Ardis Hansen
15 August 1916 --- 23 June 2012

On Saturday, June 23, 2012 Jean Hansen passed away peacefully with her niece by her side. Jean was born in Burchinal, Iowa in 1916, the daughter and oldest child of Elfrieda and Elmer Hansen. Jean had four brothers and sisters, Bob, Virginia, Max and Ollie and is survived by nine nieces and nephews and their families, all who think of aunt Jean as a unique and interesting part of the family tree.

Jean's habit of wearing Birkenstocks, ethnic clothing and a single ear cuff made her stand out in a crowd, even as her stature began to shrink in later years. A longtime member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tucson, Jean lived a life consistent with church principles. She lived her life with purpose, always looking for a way to make a contribution and always looking to learn something new. After earning her master's in education, Jean went on to teach in Oregon, Venezuela and Tucson and was described as a woman committed to engaging a child's mind. In her retirement years, Jean and good friend, Pat enjoyed many Elder Hostel trips together around the country. She was a lover of nature and was the very first person to volunteer at Tucson's Nature Conservancy where she continued her volunteer work for over 25 years. Jean also volunteered for over 30 years at the UN Center gift shop on Speedway, a great place to find a unique gift. It was through her time at the UN Center that she met good friend Bonnie. A special thanks to Bonnie and her daughter, Jann for their extra love and support given to Jean over this past year.

In keeping with her wishes to make one last contribution, Jean has donated her body to the University of Arizona for scientific study. In lieu of a funeral, a celebration of Jean's life will take place later this summer. Memorial contributions in Jean's honor can be made to the UN Center Gift Shop or The Tucson Nature Conservancy (or consider being a volunteer!) Special thank to Dr. Byrd and Cathy Dukes NP, Organizing Helpers and to Cascades Retirement community for being Jean's last earthly home. Arrangements by UA WILLED BODY PROGRAM.
