Barbara Ann (Wicks) Reid
10 October 1948 – 19 January 2010Barbara Ann Reid passed away Jan. 19, 2010, after a valiant fight with a long term illness. Barbara, or Tana, as she was known to her “back to land movement” friends, was born Oct. 10, 1948, and raised in Alogna, [Algona] Iowa, later moving to the Bay Area and settling on her land in Westport in 1976.
While in Westport, she began her first business of many while residing on the coast. She designed and constructed special fish hooks for local fishermen at the same time she ran a local fruit and vegetable co-op, sold strawberries, and raised livestock for sale. She also prepared six-course gourmet dinners for guests at the Dehaven Valley Farm, waitressed at the Tip Top and learned to scuba dive. About this time she received tax preparation training, completed basic accounting at the College of the Redwoods and opened her tax preparation business. The demand for her tax preparation service had her move in to the City of Fort Bragg in 1987. As she said, “Food, taxes and death all guarantee business.”
A believer in education and training, Barbara acquired her Enrolled Agents, Certified Financial Planner and Investment Advisor designations. She culminated her professional education attainment with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting with honors from San Francisco State in 2003. Her business, Financial Resource Solutions, sponsored radio spots offering helpful information about taxes and personal financial guidance. She wrote a regular column for the Ukiah Daily Journal published in the commerce section. She moved the business, FRS, to Ukiah in 1992 and her home to Redwood Valley.
Her volunteer work mostly centered on the coast as a member and past president of Soroptimist International of Fort Bragg, City of Fort Bragg Main Street Program, and Mendocino Coast Chamber of Commerce. She exemplified the phrase “just do it,” especially in recreational activities with the participation in local volleyball teams, scuba diving, swimming and triathlons.
She is survived by her son, Jonathon (JoJo) Reid and his wife Cammie in Ukiah; her lifetime partner, Aaron Lowell of Redwood Valley; and her brother, Larry Wicks of Gilbert, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her parents, Orville and Iola Wicks.
Services will be held at Empire Mortuary in Ukiah, Saturday, Jan. 23 at noon. Donations can be made to Seeds of Change or Redwood Valley Fire Department.
