30 July 1910 ---– 25 February 1985Orville J. Wicks, 74, longtime Algona businessman, died Monday (Feb. 25, 1985) at a Rochester, Minn., hospital. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday st First Lutheran Church, Algona, with the Rev. Dan Mangier officiating. Burial will be in Norway Township Cemetery, Kanawha. Masonic services will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Wilson Funeral Home, Algona, with visitation after 7 tonight at the funeral home.
Mr. Wicks was born July 30, 1910, in Wright County, to Cryder and Nettie (Erickson) Wicks. He attended schools in Clarion, graduating there, and did farm work in the Kanawha area. In 1932, he won the Wright County, district and state corn-husking championships, and finished third in the national contest in Galva, Ill. On Aug. 20, 1936, Mr. Wicks married Iola Holm in Fort Smith, Ark. He began work as a salesman for Arnold Motor Supply and became owner/manager of the Algona branch in 1938, retiring in 1967. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, serving several terms on the church council and on the building committee; Prudence Lodge 205 AF&AM; the Des Moines Consistory; Abu Bekr Temple of the Shrine in Sioux City, and a charter member of the Algona Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife, Iola; one son, Larry, Arlington Heights, Ill.; one daughter, Barbara Reid, Westport, Calif.; four grandchildren; two brothers, Ray, Belmond; and Everett, Kanawha; and three sisters, Mrs. Paul (Maxine) Maland, Charles City; Mrs. Vance (Carole) Basler, Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Mrs. LaVonne McCormick, Los Angeles.
