August 10, 1957 --- April 18, 2020
Suzanne Marie (Fulks) Powassin passed away on April 18, 2020, in Colorado Springs, Colorado from a terminal illness. There will be a private celebration of Suzanne’s life held by her family at a later date. Her final resting place will be in Canada.
Suzanne was born on August 10, 1957 to Charles and Alice Fulks in Clarion, Iowa. Suzanne was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She cherished her three children and her family and friends. All that knew her loved her and she will be dearly missed. She loved the outdoors, cooking, baking, crafting and singing karaoke.
Suzanne was married to Joseph Powassin, in 1979, spending most of her married life in Canada. Suzanne became a member of the Ojibwa Tribe and was their Community Health Rep. She embraced their customs, traditions, loved the pow-wows, and enjoyed the families and the children on the island.
Suzanne ran a local store and bait shop on Cyclone Island, on Lake of the Woods, where she enjoyed interacting with the hunters, fishermen, and residents. She moved to Minnesota in 1997, and went to work at Digi-Key Electronics. Suzanne began to attend college to obtain a degree in Social Work, but became ill, suffered through major surgery and had to quit, due to extensive medical issues. In 2015, she moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado to be near family.
Suzanne is survived by her two sons, Rodney Powassin, of North Dakota, and Franklin Powassin of Ontario, CA; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Dan Fulks of Cedar Falls, IA, and three sisters: Marilyn Sampson of Eagle Grove, IA, Sandra Backus of Westminster, CO, and Judy Meyers of Colorado Springs, CO. Suzanne was preceded in death by her daughter, Jennifer Powassin; brother, Roger Fulks, former husband, Joe Powassin; and her mother and father, Alice and Charles Fulks.
The family would be honored if memorials were made in Suzanne’s name to the organization listed below, as the proceeds go directly to the children on the reservation for educational events and activities. Windigo Island Ice Fishing Derby, P.O. Box 92, Kenora, ONT, P9N3X1
