Janet Reed Thornton
May 29, 1937 - April 17, 2020

t is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Janet Reed Thornton on Friday April 17th, 2020 at the age of 82 years old. Janet Reed Thorton was born in Belmond, Iowa the youngest daughter of Harry and Eunice (Reed) Slining. Janet was raised and attended school in the Belmond area while living on the historic “Reed Farm”in which had been farmed by 2 generations of the Slining family. On June 2, 1956 Janet married Roger Dean Shahan and from this marriage 5 children were born. Diane (Douglas) Spear of Ames, Jane (Bruce) Wilder of Ames, Timothy Shahan of Bellingham, Wash. Bruce Shahan of Boone, Iowa and Dale Shahan of Story City, Iowa. Janet would go on to marry John McGuire. After his passing years later Janet met and married her soulmate Richard “Dick” Thornton. The couple lived in Huxley, Iowa (later moved to Story City) running and operating The Royal Cafe with son Dale Shahan. Janet was never afraid of hard work and loved cooking and entertaining guests of her restaurant for over 26 years.

Janet was preceded in death by her late husbands, Roger Shahan, John McGuire and Richard “Dick” Thornton. Mother (Eunice Reed Slining) and Father (Harry Slining). Brothers Glenn Slining, Robert Slining, Duane Slining, Harry Jr. Slining and Sisters Mildred Macri, Arlene Davis. Janet leaves behind one sister JoAnn B. Koester of Belmond, Iowa. Daughters Diane Spear, Jane Wilder and Sons Timothy Shahan, Bruce Shahan and Dale Shahan. 9 Grandchildren and 4 Great Grandchildren.

Due to the current national COVID19 pandemic a celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Story City park bench fund in Janet's memory.
