Kanawha Banker Dies in California

KANAWHA—Neil Hanson, son of Edward and Ambjor Hanson, was born Oct. 28, 1868, in Hollingsdahl, Norway, and died April 18, 1953, at the age of 84 years, 5 months, 20 days.

His folks came to this country in the spring of 1870 and lived in Clayton county about three years. From there they moved in a covered wagon to Humboldt county, and settled on a homestead about four miles west of what is now Eagle Grove.

As the prairie became settled country schools were established and there he received his first education. He attended Humboldt college one winter and later Red Wing seminary, then took a business course at Decorah.

On June 20, 1892, he was united in marriage to Tina Olson at Thor.

Following his marriage he had a general store at Eagle Grove for a few years, then moved to a farm west of Eagle Grove. In 1905 he became associated with S. K. Groth in the grain and lumber business but sold out his interest in 1910 and worked in the Thor Savings bank for a year.

In 1911 he purchased an interest in the Farmers State bank at Kanawha and moved there with his family in November. He was elected president of the bank in 1911 and served in that capacity until January 1952, but had retired from active service in 1945. Since his retirement he has spent his summers at Kanawha and his winters in California, at which place he passed away.

He has been preceded in death by his wife, Tina, and one daughter, Alice.

He is survived by four sons and one daughter: Edward J. Hanson, Alvin A. Hanson, Mrs. Ericca Tracy, Elmer G. Hanson and John R. Hanson, and also by five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
