September 3, 1916 ---- February 6, 2020

Berniece Hiatt, age 103, of Pocahontas, passed away Thursday, February 6, 2020, at The Meadows in Clarion, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday. February 15, 2020, at Powers Funeral Home in Pocahontas, Iowa, with Rev. Ed Frank officiating. Burial will be at Summit Hill Cemetery in Pocahontas, Iowa. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 AM., Saturday, February 15, 2020, at the Powers Funeral Home in Pocahontas, Iowa. Powers Funeral Home in Pocahontas, Iowa is handling arrangements.

Berniece was born September 3, 1916 to Margaret (Stegge) and Samuel Hiatt at her grandparents, Bernard and Mary Stegge’s home, in Pocahontas. Her parents were living in Havelock at the time but moved to Pocahontas a short time later. She attended Pocahontas Public school, graduating in 1934 as valedictorian of her class. In high school, she excelled in academics and also enjoyed debate and drama.

After high school, she was employed in retail stores in Pocahontas until 1946 when she began working at the Pocahontas County Treasurer’s office. She continued there as clerk and deputy treasurer until 1966 when she was appointed Treasurer when John D. Hanson resigned. She continued as County Treasurer, being re-elected until she retired on December 31, 1990.

She was a member of the Hope United Methodist Church. She joined the church Easter Sunday 1935 where she had been attending Sunday school since age 4. She taught a second grade Sunday school class in Anne Hudson’s Primary Department for many years. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge and other card games. She also enjoyed trips with friends to the casino. She enjoyed all the time she was able to spend with her nieces and nephews and her great and great-great nieces and nephews.

She moved into her present home in Pocahontas in 1953 and was able to stay there until December of 2018. She spent 6 months at Arlington Place in Pocahontas until she moved to the Meadows assisted living in Clarion where she passed.

She is survived by her nephew Richard (Janet) Bordwell and their children (Jenny, Sarah, Kris, Katy and Jeff) and their spouses and families. Her niece Patricia Decker-Bucher (Jim) and her children (Amy and Tony) and their families, James Kibbie, Ralph, Zonda and Bob Mercer and their spouses and families. Berniece was preceded in death by her parents Samuel and Margaret Hiatt, sisters Eleanor, Louise and Jeanne and her brother Robert.
