Leo Wanken dies in Ottawa, Ill.
Leo G. Wanken, 57, of Ottawa, Ill., a former Eagle Grove resident, died in a hospital there Thursday following a bicycle accident. The bicycle he was riding hit loose gravel and he was thrown forward, striking his head on the ground, and he suffered a concussion.

Funeral servides were held at St. Columba Church at 9 a.m. Monday morning and burial was there.

Mr. Wanken is survived by his wife, the former Catherine Huibsch of Eagle Grove; sons, John, stationed at Fort Knox, Ky., Lawrence and two daughters, Jane and Anne at home; three granddaughters, brothers and sisters, including Kenneth Wanken of Clarion.

He farmed near Ottawa and for the past seven years had also been employed at Prairie Lake Country Club. Wanken was born in Dayton Township, Wright County. He was married to Catherine Huibsch here in 1949 and they farmed in this vicinity until 1962 when they moved to Illinois. He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the American Legion and the Knights of a Columbus.

Attending the funeral from here were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Thielen, Mark, Mary and Michael, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Keppers and Mr. and Mrs. Roger Keppers. He was a cousin of the Keppers brothers.
