Leslie Jay Sandvig, the son of John and Belinda Christensen Sandvig was born June 4, 1917, in Ruthven. His childhood years were spent in the Ruthven community where he received his early edication and graduated from Lake Center High School. He continued his schooling in St. Louis, Mo., where he received his degree in Mortuary Science. After graduating he worked in Chicago, Ill., for a time before returning to Ruthven, when it became necessary to help on the family farm due to his father's health.

He married Mildred Hansen January 3, 1941 in Ruthven. They spent the early years of their marriage farming north of Ruthven, where he also operated a construction business. In 1960, he returned to the funeral business when he purchased a funeral home in Eagle Grove. The family moved to Spencer in 1968, when he became a partner in Warner Funeral Horse, serving as its president until 1981.

Following his first wife's death, he married Maxine Powell on December 11, 1980 in Miami, Fla. They made their home in Miami during the early years of their marriage, and for the past several years have lived in Tallahassee, Fla.

Mr. Sandvig had been an active member of the Lutheran church. While in Spencer, he was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and sang in its choir and served on the church board. He had also been a member of both the Kiwanis and Rotary. He was an active member of the Iowa Funeral Directors Association, and served as its president in 1973.

Leslie Sandvig died at his home in Tallahassee on August 31, 1992, at the age of 75. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mildred; and his daughter, Denise Gass in 1975. He is survived by his wife, Maxine; one son and his wife, David and Jeanne of Cypress, Calif.; five grandchildren, Darren, Erik and Kirk Sandvig, all of Cypress; Jeff Gass, and his wife, Melissa, and Kimberly Gass, all of Minneapolis, Minn.; two sisters, Opal Wicks of Elmore, Minn., and Florence Osher of Ruthven; his son-in-law and his wife, Charles and Kathe Gass of Spencer.

Funeral services were held at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer, at 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 4. Pastor Lee Sather and Pastor Tom Dettmer officiated. Interment was in Crown Hill Cemetery in Ruthven. Arrangements were by the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
