Longtime community activist
Mildred H. Foley, 81, former project coordinator for Women in Community Service (WICS) and a longtime Sacramento community activist, died of heart failure Monday in her Sacramento home after a five-week illness.
Mrs. Foley was an organizer and first project director of Sacramento's WICS chapter, which assisted in education and job training, and was an administrator of the group for more than 25 years.
She also served on the National Corporation of Women in Community Service in Washington, D.C.
Involved with dozens of community and religious groups, Mrs. Foley was an organizer and county coordinator for four years of the Head Start Program during the late 1960s and served on the board of the Stanford Home Guild and the Newman Guild.
She was a past president of the Allied Arts Club, a director of Traveler's Aid in Sacramento, a representative on the President's Regional Conference Traffic Study in the 1960s, and a member of the American Association of University Women, Comstock Club and Sutter Lawn Tennis Club.
Mrs. Foley was born Mildred Corliss in Eagle Grove, Iowa and graduated in 1932 from Iowa State University in Ames. She taught in Davenport, Iowa, and later completed her master's degree in early childhood education at the university.
She moved to Sacramento in the early 1940s and was active with Sacred Heart Church. She was a president of the Sacramento Deanery Council and the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and a grand regent of Catholic Daughters of America Sacramento chapter.
Mrs. Foley is survived by her husband of 55 years, Robert E. of Sacramento; children, Terry J. Foley, Robert E. Foley II, Mary C. Hitchcock, Jane A. Foley and Nannette E. Woolford all of Sacramento, Bruce C. Foley of Los Angeles and the Rev. James Patrick Foley of San Diego; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by a son, Michael B. Foley and a brother Charles Corliss.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10 a.m. Friday in Sacred Heart Church, 39th and J streets. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery.
Arrangements were made through the Nicoletti Funeral Home and a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church.
