E. D. Spears Dropped Dead
This community was shocked Wednesday upon learning that E. D. Spears dropped dead upon the street of Bancroft. Mr. Spears is a salesman of tombstones and travels a good deal of the time. He had gone to Bancroft, we presume, canvassing, and died of heart failure. He had had one or two spells before going, but they were not severe.
The remains were sent here that evening and the funeral will be held on Saturday. If we mistake not, this makes five deaths in the Spears families within a few weeks. They are having more than their share of affliction. E. D. Spears leaves a wife and three children.

E.D. Spears was born in Madison, Wis., in 1841. After growing to manhood there he was married and moved to Nebraska where his wife died 25 years ago leaving a daughter who is now married and living in California, Mrs. L. W. Rogers.
He was married to Miss Mary Caffrey at Webster City, Ia., Oct. 13, 1889, who with two daughters, Blanche aged 13 years and Mary aged eight years survive to mourn his loss.
Mr. Spears came to Eagle Grove from Webster City 15 years ago and resided here continuously until his death.
He was a member of a Wisconsin regiment in the civil war, and, a member of the G. A. R. Post of this city. For sometime he has had serious trouble with his heart and the morning of his death was feeling weak from its action but thinking it would pass on as it had done before he went to Bancroft on business for the Ft. Dodge Marble works for whom he was traveling salesman. At Bancroft he called at Father Schimmel’s and suddenly expired. The remains were brought to Eagle Grove Wednesday night and the funeral was held in the Sacred Heart church Saturday morning, Rev. Father O'Brien conducting the services. The interment was in the Gethsemane cemetery.
The deceased was for many years a faithful member of the Catholic church and was a generous friend and a good citizen.
His sudden taking away was a cruel experience for his wife and daughters by whom he was idolized for his kindness and strong affection.
They have the sincere sympathy of many friends in their great bereavement. They have a pleasant home on Eastern Ave. and will continue their residence here.
