Guy A. Johnson, 84, passed away on December 7, 2019 in Des Moines. A visitation with the family will be held from 5 – 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at McLaren’s Funeral Chapel in West Des Moines with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 12, 2019 at Grace United Methodist Church in Des Moines, with burial at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

Guy was born on May 3, 1935 in Eagle Grove, Iowa to Einer and Lucille (Hinckley) Johnson. He graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1953 and from there went on to attend 2 years at the Eagle Grove Community College. From here he joined the United States Army in 1955. While in the Army, Guy was stationed in Germany and there he played trumpet in the Army band until his honorable discharge in 1957. Guy then continued his education, and obtained at Engineering degree from the University of Iowa in 1960. He was employed with the Utilities Board for the State of Iowa until his retirement in 2000. Guy was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Valley Tiger fan. One of his greater achievements later in life was his Hole – in – One on June 18, 2018 at the age of 82 at Blank Golf Course.

Guy was very proud to be a Mason and was an active member most of his life. He was a dual member of the Bower Lodge # 464 in Eagle Grove and the Gnemeth Lodge #577 in West Des Moines. He was Master of the Lodge in 2000, and was the Secretary from 2004 until the time of his passing. Guy was also a member of Grace United Methodist Church for over 57 years.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 62 years, Dorothy (Smith) Johnson; his children, Betsy (Wayne) Page, and Guy Jr. (Carrie) Johnson; grandchildren, Katie (Nolan) Hamilton, Tom Hines, Oliver Johnson, and Natalie Johnson; great-grandchild, Carson Hamilton; and brother, Dick (Billie) Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a grandson, Christopher Hines.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Grace United Methodist or the Gnemeth Lodge.
