Wilmer Walton
October 5, 1923 ---- February 24, 2019

Wilmer Walton, 95, of Sheffield, Iowa, passed away Sunday, February 24, 2019, at the Sheffield Care Center.

Wilmer was born at home on October 5, 1923, to Fay and Veva (Wells) Walton. He attended first and second grade at a one-room school near Wilke and third through eighth grades at Oakland #6 near Popejoy. In 1941 he graduated from Popejoy High School. He was a charter member of the Popejoy FFA organization.

When Wilmer began farming, he used a sulky plow and three horses to plow the fields, and he helped family and neighbors thresh oats using steam power. He was always very interested in new machinery and equipment used in farming operations. By the time he retired, he was using an 8-row head combine and Case tractors with heated cabs. Although he raised many kinds of livestock over the years, feeder cattle were his favorite, and he looked forward to getting new loads in the fall.

Wilmer served his country in the United States Army and Army Air Force from 1945-1946. He was united in marriage to Phyllis Ziesman on June 19, 1954, at the First Lutheran Church in Dows. He was a life-long Franklin County resident, and he resided on the Sheffield farm for 65 years.

Wilmer was a member of The American Legion, Farm Bureau, and First United Methodist Church in Sheffield. He served on the church board, Franklin County Extension Board, Farm Bureau Board, Sunrise Home Board, Sheffield Care Center Board, Franklin County Soil Conservation Board, and the Chapin Elevator Board.

Wilmer always loved spending time with family, especially holidays and get-togethers with relatives. He enjoyed dancing and skating when he was young. After retiring, he and Phyllis went on many traveling adventures together including trips to Hawaii, Alaska, Nashville, and Branson. Watching the birds and playing with his two dogs, Frosty and Tucker, always entertained him. He was especially interested in the activities of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and he was very proud of their accomplishments.

Wilmer is survived by his wife, Phyllis Walton of Sheffield; daughter, Lori Walton (Pat) Murphy of Algona; son, Randy (Kyndra) Walton of Clear Lake; grandchildren, Angela (Caleb) Sires of Woodbury, MN, Brent Murphy of Burt, Bryanna Walton of West Des Moines, and Dyllan Walton of Ames; great-granddaughters, Lauren and Eva Sires of Woodbury, MN; sister, Norma Lawson of Rockwell; brother, Eldon Walton of West Des Moines; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fay and Veva Walton; sister, Fern Knowles; brother, Stanley Walton; brothers-in-law, Homer Lawson and Harold Knowles; and sister-in-law, Earlene Walton.
