Charles ‘Chuck’ Etter, 80, of Clarion passed away Friday, November 8, 2019 at MercyOne North Iowa in Mason City. Memorial services for Chuck Etter will be held on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at 10:30 AM at First United Methodist Church, 201 3rd Avenue North East in Clarion, with Pastor Mike Gudka officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday, November 11, 2019 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Ewing Funeral Home, 1801 Central Avenue East in Clarion, and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Charles Eugene, son of Charles W. and Leone (Smith) Etter, was born on October 21, 1939 in Russell, Iowa. He grew up in the Newton area and graduated from Newton High School in 1958. Chuck served in the Army Reserves.

On June 11, 1961, Chuck was united in marriage to Carolyn Smith in Newton. The couple made their home in Newton and later moved to Orient, where they operated the grocery store in Creston. In 1978, Chuck bought Super Valu Grocery Store and moved to Clarion. He owned the grocery store in Clarion, Eagle Grove, Colfax, and Madrid. He also owned and operated Office Supply and New Home Café in Clarion.

Chuck was very active in the Clarion community. In the past, he served as chamber president and was active in other committees that are still active today. He was also active in the Methodist church.

In his spare time, Chuck loved to do woodcarving projects, read, fish and hunt. He enjoyed the outdoors. Spending time with his family was most important to him.

Chuck was a thoughtful man with a big heart. He was always ready to help anyone.

Chuck is survived by his wife Carolyn; seven children Scott (Kristin) Etter, Julie (Jim) Egli, Jana (Darrin) Soma, Lonnie (Samantha) Etter, Jacqueline (Mark) Skogerboe, Matthew (Tori) Etter, and Jill Harrington (Brian Oliver); 21 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister Norma Hanson; brother Dale Etter; any many other family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents.
