J. N. MCVICKER.

The startling information was received here Friday morning that J. N. McVicker had just died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred Pearce [Pierce], in Clarion. Only the day before he had been on our streets among old friends in apparent good health. But for about a year a cancer has been developing on the roof of his mouth, which from the first assumed a very virulent type. Only a few weeks ago he had been to Kansas City to consult a specialist who was treating it with apparent benefit. But Tuesday morning it had entered his throat to such an extent as to make breathing impossible and after an hour of great suffering death came to his relief. Mrs. McVicker and friends were notified and the G. A. R. and the Masonic fraternities of which he was a member tendered their fraternal services and Wednesday morning the remains were brought here and escorted by a company of Masons to the home on North Cadwell Ave. The G. A. R. then took charge and at the funeral Thursday will join the Masons in accompanying the body at the funeral ceremonies which will be conducted by the latter. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon in the M. E. Church at 2 o’clock and Rev. Hastings will preach the sermon. An obituary will appear next week.

Expires Suddenly at the Home of His Daughter In Clarion. Was Old Resident Here.

The sad intelligence was received in Eagle Grove Tuesday morning of the death of J. N. McVlcker, one of our old and respected citizens.

Mr. McVicker had been in the east part ot the county attending to some business and had returned as far as Clarion where he stopped to spend the night with his daughter, Mrs. Fred Pierce. During the night he was taken with choking spells and awakened his daughter, telling her that he was dying. He managed to get up and get his clothes on, but only lived about an hour.

For some time past Mr. McVicker has been afflicted with cancer of the throat and mouth, and has but recently returned from Kansas City, where he underwent operation and treatment and had intended to go back for further treatment.

Obituary of J. N. McVicker.

J. N. McVicker died at Clarion Nov. 8, 1904. He was born in Ohio July 29, 1830 and went to Illinois with his parents when but a lad, where he grew to manhood and on April 2, 1851, was married to Miss Kathrine [Catharine] Lytle. Three children were born to this union and the mother died in 1867.

Mr. McVicker entered the army at the outbreak of the Civil war and served as Second lieutenant of Co. B, 86th Illinois volunteers, and also in Co. A, 151st Illinois volunteers. He remained in the army until the close of the war in 1865.

On Feb. 16, 1871, he was married to Miss Minerva Lytle, a sister of his first wife, who survives his death. Two children were born of this union. In 1883 the family moved to Ree Heights, South Dakota, and two children died there. In 1892 they moved to Eagle Grove, where they resided until his death. Besides the bereaved wife, three daughters survive to mourn his death: Mrs. Lizzie Cooper, of Chicago; Mrs. Allie Barrow, of Gibson City, Illinois, and Mrs. Fred Pierce, of Clarion.

Mr. McVicker was a member of the Masonic fraternity, uniting with that order at Gibson City, Ill., in 1870. He was a true Mason, a true friend, an indulgent father and a faithful husband. He was a "man" in every relation in life, honorable and generous in every transaction; honored, respected and loved by everybody who knew him. Nothing but good is, or was, ever spoken of him and every acquaintance feels a personal loss and sorrow in his death. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of the entire community.

Mrs. J. N. McVicker will now make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Fred Pierce, at Clarion, and the McVicker home is for rent.
