John J. McDermott, services pending

John J. McDermott, 74, of Des Moines, died Tuesday evening in the Veterans Hospital, Des Moines, following a long illness.

He was the father of James McDermott of Eagle Grove.

Other survivors are two brothers, C. H. McDermott, Lawrence McDermott of Eagle Grove; four sisters, Mrs. Josephine Mahncke of Eagle Grove, Mary of Des Moines, Mrs. Eddie Sprienglemyer [Sprengelmeyer] of Belmont, Calif., and Mrs. John Schmidt of Ft. Collins, Colo.

Services are pending at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home.

John J. McDermott funeral held here

Funeral services for John J. McDermott, Sr., 74, of Des Moines were held Friday morning in Sacred Heart Church with the Rev. E. W. Lechtenberg officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

Mr. McDermott died Jan. 15 in the Veterans Hospital, Des Moines where he had been a patient for several days.

He is survived by one son, James McDermott of Eagle Grove; one grandchild; two brothers, C. H. McDermott and Lawrence McDermott of Eagle Grove; four sisters, Mrs. Josephine Mahnke [Mahncke] of Eagle Grove, Mary of Des Moines, Mrs. Margaret Sprienglemyer [Sprengelmeyer] of Belmont, Calif, and Mrs, Mildred Schmitz of Fort Collins, Colo.

Mr. McDermott was born in Eagle Grove, attended schools here, and during World War I, served in the U. S. Army. In later years, Mr. McDermott was a self-employed car salesman. He had lived in Des Moines for the past 20 years.

He was a member of the American Legion, the V.F.W., and the Brotherhood of Railroad Machinists.
