Funeral Services For Dr. Long Here Saturday

Dr. J. E. Long died suddenly at his home on Thursday morning, October 10. Dr. Long had been in poor health for a number of years but his sudden death was unexpected and a shock to all.

He had been visiting with friends and attending to business in the business district just the day prior to his death.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning, October 12 in the Sacred Heart church. Burial was in the family lot in Calvary cemetery with the Rev. Francis J. Phelan officiating.

Dr. John E. Long was born on August 14, 1887 at Eagle Grove, Iowa, to James H. and Mary A. Long. He passed away at his home on October 10, 1963. Dr. Long was a lifelong resident of Eagle Grove and for many years was active in community affairs. He maintained a continuing interest in foreign and national affairs.

He attended the Eagle Grove public schools graduating in 1905. He was employed by the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad Company prior to entering Northwestern University, Chicago, Ill., in 1906.

He was graduated with honors from the Northwestern University School of Dentistry in 1909. He was affiliated with the Delta Sigma Delta national dental fraternity. He was selected for membership in Omicron Kappa Upsilon, national dental honor society. He was also a member of the Iowa State Dental Society and of the American Dental Association.

He practiced dentistry at Bode, Iowa, until 1912. He returned to Eagle Grove where he practiced dentistry until his retirement in 1946.

He was married on July 12, 1917 to Ida Lalor. One son, John J. Long, was born to this union. He was preceded in death by his mother, father and one sister Helen Long.

He was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart church. He was also a charter member of the local council of the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife, Ida C. Long, one son Cdr. John J. Long, USN, of Arlington, Va., and two grandsons, John F., a student at Fordham University, New York, and James R. Long.
