February 24, 1889 --- January 23, 1918

Mrs. George Carroll died in the hospital at Iowa City, Wednesday, January 23, 1917 [1918]. She had been in failing health for the past four months and died from the effect of an operation for tumor of the brain. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon from the M. E. church, Rev. Acheson conducting the services. The Homesteaders attended the funeral in a body. The pallbearers were all members of the I. O. O. F. lodge. The M. E. Quartette composed of Mr. Everz, H. A. Wetter, Miss VanNess and Mrs. John Shoenhair had charge of the music.

Her death is very untimely and the sympathy of the entire community go out to the bereaved husband and the little motherless children.

Martha Espe was born at Thor, Ia., February 24, 1889 and died January 23, 1917 [1918] at Iowa City. At the age of six she came to Eagle Grove and resided here until her death. On December 16, 1908 she was married to George Hazleton Carroll, to this union were born three children all of whom are living and mourn the death of their mother. June Allison, Willidene Artis, and John Robert. She is survived by her husband, three children, her father, O. O. Espe of Iowa Falls, three brothers; S. O. Espe of Hanlantown, Iowa; Theodore Espe of Salt Lake City and William of Janeta, Iowa; and four sisters; Mrs. Herbert Gillette of Deer Creek Minnesota; Mrs. E. J. Maland of Jewell, Iowa, Mrs. S. R. Bruce of Iowa Falls; and Mrs. Lawrence Lingle of Pontiac, Mich.
