Leonard Albert Royal (1896-1982)

Leonard Albert Royal, the son of Albert and Flo Collins Royal, was born at Eagle Grove, Iowa on August 30, 1896. He grew up in Eagle Grove and graduated from the Sacred Heart High School in the class of 1915. He was united in marriage with Mildred Simmons in 1919 at Eagle Grove. After their marriage, they continued to live in Eagle Grove, where he was employed as an accountant for the Chicago, Northwestern Railroad. Later they moved to Mason City where they lived several years and then Leonard was transferred to Chadron and Norfolk, Nebr. Mrs. Royal died while the family was living in Norfolk in 1936. Leonard was later transferred to the main office of the Chicago, Northwestern Railroad, where he was an accountant and auditor until retiring. For the past 20 years, he had lived at Grand Rapids, Mich., to be with his daughter.

He died at a Grand Rapids hospital on Sunday, Dec. 26, 1982, at the age of 86 years, three months and 26 days.

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Virginia Gingrich of Grand Rapids; a son, Paul James Royal of South Bend, Ind.; four grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Graveside services were held on Thursday, Dec. 30, 1982 at 11 a.m. at the Calvary Cemetery in Eagle Grove with Rev. Fr. John Hemann officiating. Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Services were held in Grand Rapids on Tuesday, Dec. 28.

Leonard was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Chicago, Northwestern Railroad Retired Employees Association.
