Almonte Mayor Dies In Toronto
Mayor Austin H. Whitten of Almonte died yesterday afternoon in a Toronto hospital. He suffered a stroke April 19 at his home in Almonte. He was 62. He had been mayor for the past two years, and served as councillor for three terms.

Born in Rowan, Iowa, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Whitten. He came to Almonte in 1939 and operated, Hotel Almonte for 16 years, retiring in 1935. He married his second wife, Eugenia Mary (Maisie) Cowan, in Almonte about eight years ago. Mayor Whitten was a member of Mississippi Lodge AF Sad AM, No. 147, Almonte; Karnak Temple, Montreal; Gondemar Preceptor; Genanill Parks Board; Rosamond Memorial Hosiptal Board; Public Utilities Commission; and took an active interest in the community center.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters by a first marriage, Margaret and Doris; and by his second wife, two sons, Jimmy and Hugh, both at home; and two daughters, Eugenia and Mary Ruth, also at home. The body is at the Kerry-Scott Funeral Home, Almonte. A private funeral service will be held Wednesday. Interment will be in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte.
