Clara Gertrude Hill was born on June 29, 1895, the daughter of Holgar and Lena Bertina Tuttle [Tutland] Hill, north of Holmes. She received her education in rural Holmes country school.

Clara was united in marriage to Walter Thorn of Eagle Grove on February 12, 1912, at Clarion. The couple has made Eagle Grove their home since that time. Walter was employed with the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad for 42 years before his retirement.

She was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove, and within the church was a member of the Larkin Club.

Clara was admitted to the Community Memorial Hospital in Clarion on February 27, 1989, and to the Clarion Care Center on March 1. The couple had been living at the Clarion Care Center.

Clara Thorn died at the Clarion Care Center, February 19, 1990, at the age of 94 years, seven months, and 20 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Viola Wilett; two brothers, Elmer and Harry; and four sisters, Lottie Williams, Mabel Sadler, Edith Cox, and Ethel Johnson.

She is survived by her husband, Walter; two sons, Clifford, Eagle Grove; and Bobbie, West Covina, Calif.; four daughters, Vivian Chapman, Des Moines; Mrs. Marley (Anita) Griffith, Eagle Grove; Mrs. Alfred (Virginia) Anderson, Eagle Grove; Mrs. Merl (Beverly) Askvig, Woolstock; one sister, Emma Johnson, Eagle Grove; 19 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. on February 22 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Maynard Moen officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
