Mrs. Aaron Yearous

Elizabeth Shepperd, fourth child of John and Elizabeth Henkes Shepperd was born at Stillwater, Minn., on August 20, 1858, and passed away at her home in Eagle Grove on January 26, 1938, at the age of 79 years, 5 months and 6 days.

Her parents returned to Clayton county, Iowa, while she was still an infant, having earned the money in Minnesota with which they purchased their first farm, in Wagner township, Clayton county, near Monona, Iowa.

At this time free homesteads could be had in southern Minnesota, but because of fear of Indians who were hostile to white settlers, the family returned to be near relatives in Iowa.

In her early womanhood she was baptized by immersion into membership in the United Brethern church, and since that time has lived a faithful and sincere Christian life. She read the Bible many times. She attended the Baptist church from the time of its location in its present place until ill health forced her to remain at home, and was a member of the Friendly Bible Class and the Mission Circle. She was also a member of the Degree of Honor Lodge.

She was united in marriage with Aaron Yearous on February 15, 1882, the occasion being celebrated by a wedding at the home of her parents.

Mrs. Yearous came to Eagle Grove as a bride, and has since lived in the home which was then built for her.

Her children were Warren Yearous, who was born in April 1883, and died in May 1903; Roscoe, of Cottage Grove, Oregon; Milo, of Metiskow, Alberta; Esther Walster, who cared for her during her last illness; Glenn, of Emporia, Kansas; Howard of Western Springs, Illinois; Clara, who lived but a few days in June, 1898.

Mrs. Yearous was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away in May, 1923. She is survived by five children, twelve grandchildren, one great grandchild, and two brothers, George Shepperd of Kenyon, Minn., and Eli Shepperd of Monona, Iowa.

Mrs. Yearous has spent her entire life in unselfish devotion to her family, constantly sacrificing her own comforts for their advancement.

Since the death of Mr. Yearous, she has spent the colder months of the year with her children, but returned to her home in the summer to live among her old friends and neighbors.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the Baptist church, in charge of Rev. Moore. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.

Those from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mrs. E. E. Shepperd and Mrs. Wm. Shepperd of Monona, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Yearous, Elgin; Milo Yearous, Metiskow, Alberta, Canada; Mr. and Mrs. Howard Yearous, Western Springs, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Glen Yearous, Emporia, Kans.; Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Watson, Newton; Miss Watson, Preston, Chas. McDonald, Clinton, Mrs. Thos. Benson and Mrs. Chris Larson, Britt.
