Skadburg killed in 1-car crash

An Eagle Grove Community College student is Wright County's 12th traffic victim of 1969.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Wednesday at Holmes Lutheran Church for Duane Arnold Skadburg, 18, Rt. 2, Clarion. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs Percy Skadburg. Rt. 2, Clarion.

The youth a freshman at ICCC here, was found dead in his 1966 Mustang by Highway Patrolman Frank Cooley of Eagle Grove about 6:05 p.m. Sunday. The accident apparently had taken place at 2:20 a.m. or some 16 hours earlier.

The car was on its top, nosed to the edge of a small creek below a bridge five miles south of Clarion on the Eagle Grove blacktop three-quarter mile east of its intersection with County K.

HOMEWARD BOUND

Patrol Cooley said Skadburg, alone in the car, was apparently homeward bound from the residence of his girl friend, Judy DeNio of rural Dows, and was heading west on the blacktop. Cooley said it appeared that the car for some reason, veered off the south shoulder as it neared the bridge, entered the ditch, flipped over as it went off the embankment and landed on its top. Cooley said the car could not be seen from the road.

The patrolman said he began his search for the vehicle Sunday afternoon after friends of the youth informed him that Skadburg was missing. Cooley said he traced the route Skadburg usually took from the DeNio residence to his home.

The Wright County Sheriffs office was also notified that the youth was missing and Sheriff’s officers were involved in the search.

Cooley said his investigation has shown no evidence of traffic violations, drinking or high speed. He said it appeared that Skadburg died instantly of his injuries.

BASKETBALL STARTER

The young man was a native of the Clarion community. He was a 1969 graduate of Clarion High School where he was a starting forward on the basketball team and vice president of his senior class. He was also active in 4-H and president of the Clarion FFA his senior year.

He has been a student at ICCC since September and was also employed part time at the Clarion Farmers Elevator Cooperative.

The Rev. Marvin Dooley officiated the services. Burial was in the Holmes cemetery.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Norman, a teacher in Williamsburg, Ia., and Byron at home.
