Samuel R. Umstead, son of John and Jane Umstead, was born January 17, 1887, at Washingtonville, Pennsylvania, and departed this life May 3, 1958 at the age of 71 years, 3 months and 17 days. He was baptized in infancy and joined the Evangelical Lutheran church in 1901 at Washingtonville. His membership was later transferred to the United Presbyterian church of Goldfield, Iowa in 1912, and later transferred to First Methodist church of Eagle Grove.

On December 11, 1912 he was united in marriage to Nellie Mae McCutcheon. To this union was born six children. They made their home in the Goldfield and Eagle Grove vicinity and since 1928 they have lived in the town of Eagle Grove.

Mr. Umstead assisted his son LeRoy at the Eagle Grove sales barn, and was also employed by the Eagle Grove schools as an assistant custodian before a paralytic stroke necessitated his retirement.

He is survived by five sons LeRoy, Robert, Paul, Lyden and Richard of Eagle Grove, and one daughter Maxine (Mrs. Dale Zeigler) of Corwith, Iowa; also fourteen grandchildren, one brother Raymond Umstead of Eagle Grove, besides several nieces and nephews. His parents and his wife Nellie preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist church and Rev. Roy Cox officiated. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.

Sam Umstead Rites Tuesday

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the Methodist church for Samuel Umstead, 71, who died Saturday afternoon at the home of his son Robert Umstead. Death was caused by a self-inflicted wound.

Mr. Umstead is survived by one daughter Mrs. Dale Zeigler of Corwith, five sons LeRoy, Robert, Paul, Lyden and Richard of Eagle Grove, 14 grandchildren and one brother Raymond Umstead of Eagle Grove.

Mr. Umstead who had assisted his son LeRoy at the sale barn had been in failing health for some time.

Rev. Roy Cox officiated at the funeral rites, and interment was in Rose Hill cemetery.
