LYDEN W. UMSTEAD

Lyden Wayne Umstead was born on July 21, 1919, the son of Samuel and Nellie McCutcheon Umstead at Clarion, Iowa. He received his education in the Eagle Grove School System and graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1941. After high school, he worked in the ship yards of Portland, Oregon, building cargo and troop ships as a journeyman electrician. He was united in marriage to Viola Bradford on January 1, 1945, at Vancouver, Washington. Shortly after their marriage, the couple made their home in Eagle Grove where he was employed by Iowa Public Service (MidAmerican) and Iowa Central Community College. They also made their home in Napa, Calif., and wintered in Tucson, Ariz. until his health deteriorated. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove.

Lyden Wayne Umstead died at the Community Memorial Hospital, Clarion, at the age of 76 years, 7 months and 19 days.

Survivors include his wife, Viola Umstead of Eagle Grove; son, Craig Umstead, Tucson, Ariz.; daughters, Sharon Brinkert and husband Ron, Grand Forks, N. D., and Kimberly Umstead, Tucson, Ariz.; three grandchildren; brothers, Roy, Robert, and Paul Umstead, all of Eagle Grove; and sister, Maxine Zeigler, Corwith.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 13, 1996, at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove with the Reverend Omar Pettersen officiating the 10:30 a.m. service. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Willim Funeral Home, Ltd, Eagle Grove, was in charge of the arrangements.
