Ruth (Penfield) Frakes Ely
August 16, 1913 --- October 24, 2002

Ruth Ely died on Thursday, October 24, 2002, at the Rotary Ann Home in Eagle Grove, Iowa, at the age of 89. Survivors include her son, John Frakes, and wife, Judy, Eagle Grove; one daughter, Arneda Toillion, and husband, Bruce, Spokane, Wash.; a
step-son, Harlan Ely, and wife, Mary Jane, Fort Dodge, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Bernice Penfield, Mesa, Ariz.; 9 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, James Frakes; three sisters, Gladys Rasmussen, June Borel, and Ethel Penfield; two brothers, John and Richard Penfield; and several nieces and nephews.

Ruth Penfield, the daughter of Lute and Emma (Gerdes) Penfield, was born August 16, 1913, on the family farm near Clarion, Iowa. She was raised and educated in the area, graduating from Clarion High School in 1931. She married John Frakes in 1934, at Eagle Grove. He died in 1957. She later married William Ely in 1971, at Sacred Heart Church in Eagle Grove. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove. She was active with the P.T.A., school and church, wrote [worked for] the Federal Census and after moving to Fort Dodge, she ran a small antique shop. She also worked at Scudder's Womens Clothing, the City of Eagle Grove Recreation Department, Rotary Ann, and helped at the election poles [polls].

Funeral services were held Monday, October 28, at 10:30 a.m., at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove. A Parish Vigil was held at 7 p.m. at the Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove on Sunday at 7 p.m. Burial was held in the Calvary Cemetery in Eagle Grove. Foust Funeral Home of Eagle Grove was in charge of arrangements
