HEART ATTACK FATAL TO MRS. H. B. BJORNSON

First White Child Born in Wright County, Parents Coming to This County in 1854

The community was shocked to hear of the sudden death of Mrs. H. B. Bjornson at her home north of town on Thursday evening at 10:30. She had been feeling as well as usual but after retiring she suffered a heart attack to which she was subject, and from which she never rallied.

First White Child Born in County

Mrs. Bjornson was the first white child born in Wright county and she lived her entire life within a radius of one-half mile of where she was born with the exception of the three years that they lived in Goldfield. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Montgomery, came to this section of the country and built a log cabin on the farm known as the Montgomery farm in 1854, and there the family lived and suffered the hardships of pioneer life. With these pioneer years as a background, Mrs. Bjornson's life reflected this early training and was a splendid example to all who knew her. She was a home loving woman and her family was her delight. Her Christian influence was felt by all who came in contact with her.

Funeral services were held at the Baptist church on Sunday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. I. D. Halvorsen. Burial service was held in the Glenwood cemetery.

Amanda Jane Montgomery was born in Wright County on March 21, 1855, and died at her home north of Goldfield, Nov. 2, 1933, at the age of 78 years, 7 months and 12 days. She was the daughter of William Hamilton and Elizabeth Bishop Montgomery and the eldest of five children, three who passed away in early childhood, and one brother, John, who preceded her in death a little over three years ago.

On October 18, 1876, she was married to H. B. Bjornson. To this union eight children were born, Nellie, Willie and Harry preceding her in death. She leaves to mourn, her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Ada Rasmussen, four sons, Arthur, Frank, Fred and Homer, and sixteen grandchildren.

Her parents were the third settlers in this county, coming here on Sept. 10, 1854, and she is the first white child on record to be born here. Her entire life was spent in this community. Her desire never to be a burden to anyone was granted in her sudden passing. She was industrious, happy, quiet and home loving. She enjoyed to the full the family gatherings. She was a true friend, a devoted wife and mother. We can say of her “Her children rise up and call her blessed, her husband also and he praiseth her.”

She has been a faithful member of the Baptist church for forty years. She first united with the Baptist church at Renwick and later had her membership transferred to Goldfield.

Relatives from out-of-town who attended the services were Mr. and Mrs. Harold Pride and Miss Grace Cunningham of Ames; Mr. and Mrs. Bert Cunningham and Mrs. J. M. Montgomery of Storm Lake; Misses Esther and Vera Rasmussen of Des Moines, Miss Alice Bjornson and Doris Rasmussen of Cedar Falls; Mrs. McQuade of Fort Dodge, Mr. and Mrs. Cloyd Comstock and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bjornson of Eagle Grove; Oscar Bjornson of Holmes, and Mr. and Mrs. Will McCurry and Bert McCurry of Renwick.
