Viola M. Kessler, 98, Meservey, died Feb. 23, 2019 at Muse-Norris Hospice in Mason City. Services were held March 2 at First Reformed Church in Meservey, with burial in the Meservey Cemetery.

Viola Marie was born May 12, 1920 to Fred and Tena (Gruis) Ruiter. She married Raymond Kessler in 1940. She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter Vanessa Scheger; sister Diane Ruiter; and brother Dale Ruiter. She is survived by son Calvin Kessler of Mason City; and siblings Leona Orvick of Forest City, Maurine Nash of Lady Lake, FL, and LuVern (Dorothy) Ruiter of Thornton.

Viola Marie Kessler, 98, of Meservey, died Saturday, February 23, 2019, at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2019, at First Reformed Church, 620 2nd St, Meservey, with Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. Burial will be at Meservey Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2019, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake. Family suggests memorial contributions to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation or to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Viola was born May 12, 1920, the daughter of Fred and Tena (Gruis) Ruiter in Meservey. She married Raymond Kessler February 15, 1940, in Meservey. He preceded her in death on April 15, 2000. Viola grew up and attended school in Meservey. She grew up farming and continued that throughout her life.

Viola was a member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey, where she was very active in the church and auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends, riding her bike around town, baking (she was famous for her angel food cake), hockey with her grandsons, dancing at the Surf Ballroom and fishing with Ray. She always brought a smile to everyone she was around.

Viola is survived by a son, Calvin Kessler of Mason City; two grandchildren, Elliott Kessler of Mason City and Austin Kessler of Clear Lake; siblings, Leona Orvick of Forest City, Maurine Nash of Lady Lake, FL, and LuVern (Dorothy) Ruiter of Thornton; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter Vanessa Scheger; a sister Diane Ruiter; a brother, Dale Ruiter; and her parents.
