Donald E. "Duke" Conaway Sr., 80, of Eagle Grove, died Wednesday, July 27, 2005 at Trinity Regional Medical Center m Fort Dodge. Graveside services were held Saturday, July 30, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove with lunch following at the United Methodist Church for family and friends.

Don was born February 26, 1925, in Chicago, Ill., to Rutherford R. and Marie Hoveland Conaway. The family moved to Eagle Grove and he graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1943. He attended Westmar College in LeMars. He proudly served his country in the Navy during World War II, stationed in the South Pacific with the Sea Bee. He returned to Iowa in 1946 and on April 20th of that year married Betty Larson at the Church of Christ in Webster City. To that union five children were born. Don was active in the Army National Guard for 36 years and spent 10 years as the Company Commander of the Eagle Grove division. He was employed by Tobin Packing, then the Hormel Packing Plant in Fort Dodge for over 30 years. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and he was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.

He is survived by his wife, Betty, five children: Donald Jr. (Cheri) of Cedar Rapids, Marcia of Colorado Springs, Colo; Robert (Merry) of Eagle Grove; Beverly (Dennis) Stephens of Goldfield, and William (Linda) of Webster City; 12 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters: Ruth Thomas of Eagle Grove, Lenora (Everett) Underwood, of Lehigh, Phyllis Rengstorf of Porterville, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one great-grandson.

The Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove was in charge of the arrangements.
