Margaret Ruth (Thompson) Popp, 79, of Phoenix, passed away peacefully March 11, 2014, surrounded by her loving husband and family. Born Oct. 6, 1934, to Cora Maria (Nelson) and Mons Abraham Thompson, Ruth was the couple's seventh and youngest child. She grew up in rural Kanawha, Hancock County, Iowa, where she attended country school until her parents moved to Clarion, Iowa, in 1945. Ruth graduated from high school in 1952, earned a registered nursing degree from the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, Sioux City, Iowa and later earned a B.S. in Nursing from the University of Oregon in Eugene. Ruth was united in marriage to Stephen Popp Sept. 10, 1967, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Portland, Multnomah County. Over the years, they made their home in Portland, Scottsdale, Ariz., and currently in Phoenix. Ruth had a very dedicated 20-year career in nursing. She held supervisory positions at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene, and Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Stephen; stepsons, Stephen (Lauren), David (Ruby) and William; grandchildren, Andrew (Kristin), Catherine and Julia; sister-in-law, Elsa Thompson of Ames, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 28, 2014, at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church, located within the campus of the Oregon Episcopal School, 6300 S.W. Nicol Road, Portland. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 333 S.W. Skyline Blvd., Portland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ruth's name to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of the Valley, Phoenix. Ruth will be cherished and missed by all who dearly loved her.
