Richard Arthur Gangestad was born March 26, 1934 at Eagle Grove, Iowa, the son of Maurice and Florence Ransford Gangestad. He was educated in the Eagle Grove Schools. He entered the U.S. Army in 1954 and served for two years. On June 19, 1954, he was united in marriage to Mary Lou Hazelwood of Steamboat Rock, Iowa, at the home of her parents. The couple lived on a farm near Hampton for one year, and at Steamboat Rock, where Richard was employed at the creamery. From Steamboat Rock, they returned to Eagle Grove and he became employed by the Umthun Trucking Co.

Richard was killed in a truck accident near Lohrville, Iowa on March 15. At the time of his death, he was 41 years, 11 months, and 19 days.

He is survived by his mother, wife, and six children: Sons, Wayne, Marshalltown, and Michael, Eagle Grove; daughters, Mrs. William Holmes, Boone; Lois Gangestad, Lora Gangestad and Jeanine Gangestad, all of Eagle Grove; and one grandson. Also two brothers, Melvin, Two Harbors, Minn., and Kenneth, Atlantic, Ia. He was preceded in death by his father.

He was a member of the Samuel Lutheran Church. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. at the Samuel Lutheran Church on Thursday, March 18. Rev. Orville Sanderson officiated and burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
