Charles Ray Garrett was born May 28, 1909, the son of Burt and Mary Rae Garrett at Orillia. He started his education in the Dexter school system and graduated from Redfield High School in 1927. Following high school, he attended Iowa State University for two years. He was united in marriage to Hollace Maddy of Pleasantville on May 28, 1933. The couple farmed in the Redfield area.

He was then employed with the F.H.A. as a farm loan officer, the S.C.S. and in 1948 joined and then purchased the Grill Insurance Agency in Eagle Grove. The agency later merged to become the Garrett-Paine Agency. He eventually acquired full ownership and continued as owner of the Garrett Agency until his retirement in 1972. His wife died in 1974.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ, Eagle Grove, a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, Past Master of the Bower Lodge, Past District Governor of the Lions Club (Area 9E), and past president of the Eagle Grove Lions Club.

C. Ray Garrett died at his son's home in rural Eagle Grove on Sunday, October 4, 1992. He had attained the age of 83 years, four months and six days. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his sister, Elsie Price and two infant children. He is survived by his son, Donald Garrett, Eagle Grove; daughter, Lynne Averett, Omaha, Neb.; three brothers, Mark, Diagonal, Harmon, Norman City, Ill., and Harold, Adel; two sisters, Mrs. Percy (Alice) Jenkins of Lamoni, and Mrs. Dale (Ruth) Wicks, Adel; six grandchildren, Mrs. Joel (Kristine) Zoeller, Jackson, Tenn.; Mrs. Darryl (Sheila) Cochrane, Clinton; Mrs. William (Sandra) Quintus, Eagle Grove; Stephanie Averett; Melissa Garrett, and Brian Averett; two step granddaughters, Kristin and Julie Kramersmeier and 11 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held October 7 at the United Church of Christ, Eagle Grove. The Rev. Scott C. Hall officiated at the 1:30 p.m. services. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Kastler-Babcock Services was in charge of arrangements.
