Clarice A. (Spangler) Carlson, 89, of Britt passed away Thursday, December 13, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa in Mason City. Funeral services for Clarice Carlson will be held on Monday, December 17, 2018 at 10:30 AM at First Lutheran Church, 70 5th Avenue North West in Britt with Pastor Willie Rosin officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 16, 2018 from 3:00 – 5:00 PM at First Lutheran Church, 70 5th Avenue North West in Britt and will continue one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Monday.
Clarice Arlene, the daughter of Arthur, Sr. and Clara (Tuttle) Spangler, was born in Eagle Grove, Iowa. She was raised and educated in the Eagle Grove area, and graduated from Eagle Grove High School. Clarice was united in marriage to Gordon Carlson on September 29, 1948 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. To this union, children Theresa and Edward were born. The couple made their home in rural Clarion, then moved to a farm northwest of Kanawha where they farmed until moving to Britt in 1980.
Clarice worked as a cook at the We-3 Restaurant in Britt for a number of years, followed by several years at the Hobo House. She retired in January of 2018 after 20 years at Westview Care Center at the age of 88. Over the years, she also kept busy doing upholstery work and alterations.
Clarice was a lifelong Lutheran, was active in ladies group and as a Sunday school teacher in years past. She was currently a member of First Lutheran Church in Britt. Clarice was active as a 4H leader, and she and Gordon were early members of the Britt Draft Horse Association.
Clarice loved attending sporting events of her grandchildren, baking, cooking and making treats for visitors and for special occasions and Holidays. She enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Clarice will be lovingly remembered for her love of family and friends, always putting others first, her compassion for the residents at Westview Care Center and for her integrity and being a feisty and hard working woman.
Clarice is survived by her children, Theresa (Gary) McNeese of Britt and Ed (Sue) Carlson of Britt; grandchildren Carrie (Mike) Valster and children Kalin and Cole of Pella, Andrew McNeese and children Chloe and Kaden of Marion, Robert (Kristin) McNeese and children Aiden, Graysen and Emmersyn of Britt, Jessica (Adam) Otto and children McKinley, Quinn and Finley of Clear Lake, Darin (Samantha Harmon) Carlson of Britt, Jake (Brittany) Carlson and son Huck of Britt and Casey (Morgan Johnson) Carlson of Britt; sisters Dorothy Buss and Ina Mae Skadburg and brothers Jack Spangler and Abe Spangler; along with numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Clarice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gordon in 1992, one sister and three brothers.
