Cashious Elmer Rhiner, known to all as "Cass", was born at Hardy, Iowa, May 10th, 1880, the son of John and Abbie Rhiner. His childhood was spent in Hardy where he attended school, after which he was associated with his father in farming.
Cass was married to Laura E. Anderson on September 28, 1898. To this union one daughter, Clara Lillian, was born. In 1914 and his family moved to Eagle Grove. For the next 15 years he was a mechanic at the Smith and Paine garage. Cass has been a member of the Methodist Church for 42 years. He, also, was a member of the Golden Links No. 68 Odd Fellow Lodge; Encampment No. 12 and Auxiliary; and the Junietta Rebekah Lodge 185 of Eagle Grove. Cass, one, of the most familiar figures in our town, lived close to nature, and loved God's great outdoors. His fame as a gardener and fisherman is known near and far, Cass had the great gift of giving sincere friendship and he lived by the Golden Rule.
Last Sunday he and his wife celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary together in the home of their daughter. Monday morning as he and Mrs. Rhiner were preparing to spend the day in their favorite pastime, fishing, Cass was stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage and without regaining consciousness passed away early Wednesday morning, October l, at the age of 72 years, 4 months, and 21 days.
Cass leaves in sadness his wife, Laura and daughter, Mrs. Forrest Christensen and the following half brothers: Verne of Kansas City, Mo.; Dewey of Cedar Rapids, Ia.; John of Worland, Wyo.; Elvin of Los Angeles, Calif.; and George of Hollywood, California.
