Andrew M. Pals, 97, of Meservey, died Tuesday, September 19, 2017, at Hospice of North Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, at the First Reformed Church in Meservey with Rev. Rodney Meester presiding. Burial will be in the Meservey Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., Sunday, at Retz Funeral Home, 201 Ohio Street, Meservey.

Andrew Matthew Pals was born December 8, 1919, in Meservey, Iowa a son of Peter H. and Gesena (Wolters) Pals. He graduated from the Meservey School and helped his father on the farm. He was united in marriage to Lucille Donat on June 12, 1947 at the First Methodist Church in Waterloo, Iowa. Andrew M. Pals was a faithful member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey, where he served as Deacon and Elder for many years. He was an officer and board member of Sunny Side Haven in Meservey for 25 years.

He enjoyed traveling, and spent several winters in Florida. He would come back with some magic trick he had learned and show it to his grandchildren and others. He loved farming and took great pride in his John Deere A tractor. He also raised Herford hogs and showed them at fairs including the State Fair where he won several blue ribbons. He was a committee member of the ASCS and belonged to the Meservey Camera Club. He enjoyed visiting with anyone about the old days and would say some words in German, especially when he knew they could understand what he said.

Surviving family include son: Kent (Terri), Meservey; daughter: Carla (Bruce) Bertelsen, Greenville, WI; five grandchildren: Matthew (Amy) Pals; Kristi (Joel) Kohler; Alex Pals and friend Kaitlin Olson; Alyssa (Nick) Korwin; Jeremy Bertelsen and friend Tina Beu. He was looking forward to his first great-grandchild due in October. Andrew is preceded in death by his wife Lucille, his parents, a sister in infancy, 2 brothers Fred & Henry and sisters Lena (Safford) Lock and Marie (Bernard) Vierkant and Lydia (Bill) Hemmes.
