Gresham [Oregon] resident Bernice Maxine Hovey-Bramon died Sunday, March 27. She was 88. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, at Gresham Memorial Chapel, 257 S.E. Roberts Ave. Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
Bernice was born Jan. 2, 1923, in Adaza, Iowa, to Ward and Lucia (Quigley) Wright. She was raised and educated in Iowa. After her graduation, Bernice taught school in a one-room schoolhouse. Bernice met Conrad A. Hovey, and they were married April 28, 1946, after his honorable discharge from the military after World War II. They farmed in Iowa until they moved to Los Angeles in 1953, where Bernice worked as a secretary for Northrop Corp. Conrad and Bernice moved to Gresham in 1971, and she worked for PacifiCorp, retiring in the 1980s.
Bernice was very active in the Lutheran church. She was the organist for St. Paul of Damascus Lutheran Church from the time it was built in the 1970s until her retirement in 1996.
After Conrad's death in 1998, Bernice worked at the Gresham Senior Center, where she met Dean Bramon. They were married June 12, 2003, at their home in Gresham. Bernice loved music. For hobbies, she enjoyed gardening, camping, cooking and sewing.
Survivors include her husband; son, Steven Hovey of Cordes Lakes, Ariz.; daughters, Claudia Lewis of Portland and Cecelia Losey of Chandler, Ariz.; sister, Zola Medgaarden of Oklahoma City; brothers, Ward Wright of Kanawha, Iowa, and Carol Wright of Albuquerque, N.M.; nine grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. Gresham Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
