Irvin Arthur Nelson, the son of Erling and Cecilia (Michaelson) Nelson, was born November 30, 1935 in Humboldt County, Iowa. He was raised and educated at Dakota City and attended Humboldt High School. At the age of 17, Irvin enlisted into the United States Army and served in Korea during the war. He was united in marriage to Nelda Thoden on April 14, 1954 at Livermore. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home and he and Nelda made their home in Dakota City.
Irvin worked for Christensen Oil, Corn Belt Power, and Trinity Industries, installing anhydrous tanks, before becoming the plant manager for Dodgen Industries. He then accepted the position of purchasing manager at Hawkeye Leisure Trailers for many years until his retirement. Mrs. Nelson passed away in March of 1995 and Irvin continued to maintain his home in Dakota City. Irvin was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Adams American Legion Post 119, and Sathers-Odgaard VFW Post 5240. He loved to fish especially in Canada with his friends. He also enjoyed taking care of his yard and competing in the annual Humboldt/Dakota City Chamber of Commerce Christmas Light contest. Above all, Irvin loved the time he spent with his family, especially the camping trips to Lake Cornelia with his grandchildren.
Irvin is survived by his daughter, Danna (Jeff) Chapman of Boone; son, David Nelson of Dakota City; grandchildren, Sara Burgin, Scott Burgin, Shane Burgin, Tiffany Ropte, and Taylor Christensen; great grandchildren, Tanner, Aiden, Alec, and Brielle Burgin, Riley Sorensen, and Reign and Ruthie Ropte; and his sister, Peggy (Jim) Brady of Dakota City. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Nelda; son, Don; and sister, Mary Ann Kiley.
