Omer R. Ross, age 96, of Mazeppa, [Minnesota] died suddenly on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018, at Mayo Clinic Hospital — Rochester, Saint Marys Campus. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Zumbrota, with Pastor Eric Westlake officiating. Burial will be in the Mazeppa Cemetery with military honors provided by the Mazeppa Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church and for one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.

Omer Russell Ross was born on July 17, 1922, in Dows, Iowa, to Clara May (Ritter) and Omer John Ross. He attended country schools and had a total of seven years of schooling, before attending a trade school in the Twin Cities for sheet metaling. After trade school, he moved to San Diego and one year later on Oct. 29, 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force. He departed for Guam in February 1945, working in the weather reconnaissance unit taking pictures. He flew in B24s and B52s and enjoyed airplanes for many years. Omer served in the military for three years.

After his honorable discharge on Oct. 10, 1945, he opened a garage with his brother Raymond in Dows, Iowa. While working in Dows, he met the love of his life, Dona Larsson. They were married on June 25, 1946, after three months of dating. Omer was married to Dona for 72 years. They had five children, Pat, Danny, Chet, Pam and Omer Dean. They made their home farming outside Mazeppa.

Omer enjoyed collecting guns, fishing, farming, tractors and mechanical work. He truly was a jack-of-all-trades that could “fix” just about anything. Omer was incredibly hard-working, loyal and fearless.

Omer is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Dona; children, Pat (Jerry) Siems, Chet Ross and Pam (Denny) Poncelet, all of Mazeppa; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Omer was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Richard, Raymond and Freeman; one sister, Thelma Anderson; two sons, Danny and Omer Dean; and daughter-in-law, Sharon Ross.

Omer’s family looks forward to shaking his hand again at the pearly gates of heaven.
