James VanderBerg, 90, of Battle Lake, Minnesota, died on Tuesday, October 9, 2012, at the Battle Lake Good Samaritan Center. Memorial services were held at 2:00 p.m., on Sunday, October 14, at the First Lutheran Church in Battle Creek, Minnesota. The Rev. Magnus Peterson officiated at the services. Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

James Lauren VanderBerg, was born on March 3, 1922, the son of John and Bertha (Prins) VanderBerg. He attended schools in Sioux Center, Iowa, graduating from high school in 1939. James then continued his education at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa and in 1943 graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business. James and Marjorie Swisher met at Morningside and were married on April 2, 1943. In June of 1943, James left for Officers Candidate School with the U.S. Army Signal Corps in New Jersey, graduating as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1944. He received more communication training in New York, then Joplin, Missouri, before being transferred overseas in 1944, where he served in the Pacific Theatre under Gen. McArthur in New Guinea and the Philippines where he was stationed when the war ended in 1945.

He remained with his crew teaching electricity and returned to the U.S. in the fall if 1946. He taught high school economics in Iowa for one year. Jim then started dental school at the University of Michigan in Detroit, attending four years and graduating with a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS). He did a year of dentistry with the Army Air Force in Puerto Rico. He returned to the U.S. where he practiced with his brother in Sheldon, Iowa, before beginning his own practice in Clarion, retiring in 1975.

James and Marjorie built a home on West Battle Lake in 1980, did a lot of traveling, and they enjoyed their family.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; three daughters, Ellen (David) Johnson of Delano, Minnesota, Linda (Thomas) Kluss of Evanston, Illinois and Mary (Douglas) Mason of Naperville, Illinois; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, David (Gladys) VanderBerg of Sioux Center, Iowa and one sister, Ruth Korver of Sheldon, Iowa; and by numerous relatives and friends. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, John and Bertha VanderBerg; one infant daughter, Susan Gay VanderBerg; one brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Elmer H. and Marjorie VanderBerg; and one brother-in-law, Arian Korver.

The Glende-Nilson Funeral Home of Battle Lake, Minnesota, was in charge of the arrangements.
