October 18, 1882 ---- January 6, 1929

On Sunday afternoon, January 6th, the gates of the Celestial City were opened, and one of our loved ones passed within. Mrs. Lewis Mathews, prominent in various activities of the city, succumbed to pneumonia following an attack of flu. The community where she has spent most of her life is deeply grieved at her departure.

Edith Alberta Fraseur, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Fraseur of Tipton, was born October 18, 1882. She grew to womanhood in this community, and graduated from the Tipton high school. After finishing her studies in the public school she became a student in the Iowa state college at Ames. During her attendance there she was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. In 1906 she graduated from the department of home economics. She became a teacher in the public schools at Rocky Ford, Colorado; Tipton, Eagle Grove and Council Bluffs, Iowa. In this field of labor she served with rare acceptability. During these years she spent most of her vacations with her people in Tipton, which place she always claimed as her home. March 12, 1925, she was united in marriage to Lewis M. Mathews, of Tipton, where they have since resided.

When about eighteen years of age she united with the Trinity Lutheran church, and continued a member of that society until her decease. For a time she was superintendent of the primary department of the Sunday school, and served the church in various other capacities as strength would permit.

She was a member of Tipton chapter of the O.E.S., the P.E.O sisterhood, also of several social and study clubs. She was skilled in dramatics and freely gave her services in that line whenever called upon, especially in rehearsing students who participated in oratorical contests, and frequently had charge of community plays. Her willing service in these and various other ways stamped her spirit and life upon this community indelibly.

Mrs. Mathews was fond of children, and these responded with a warmth that amounted almost to adoration. Especially was this true of her nieces and nephews, Carolyn, Barbara Ann, and Katherine Goepfert of Watertown, South Dakota; Luvajean, Devonne, George Jr., John Lee and Joan Frasuer of Tipton.

Mrs. Mathews delighted in her home, and in ministering to her parents and other members of her family, was a joy and consolation to her husband. Her sterling character and true womanly qualities were recognized and appreciated by her many acquaintances. One who knew her intimately says of her that she was one of the most dearly beloved young women of the community.

An only sister, Mrs. Ray Goepfert, died in Watertown, Nov. 12, 1923. She is survived by her husband, her parents, and by two brothers, Forrest N. and George L. Fraseur, as well as the nieces and nephews mentioned.

Funeral services were conducted at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon at Trinity Lutheran church, Rev. Frederick D. Bolt officiating, Rev. W. Van Buren preaching the sermon. Interment was made in the Masonic cemetery near Tipton.
