Services for Leona Hilda Lau, 85, Klemme, who died June 29, 1993 at the North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City, were held Friday, July 2, 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Klemme with Rev. Jerry Robertson officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Madelyn Priebe, organist who accompanied Lance Arnold, vocalist. Honorary bearers were Bruce Arnold, Donald Day, Gerald Koerner, Roy Arnold, Milton Day, LeRoy Lau, Wilbur Arnold, Kermit Koerner and Alfred Lau. Casket bearers were Bill Arnold, Jerry Stokesbary, Dennis Ridder, Roger Ridder, Lance Arnold and Larry Veldhouse. Burial was at Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme with Tenold Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Leona Hilda Lau was born in Klemme, IA on July 20, 1907, at the home of her parents, Henry and Mary (Roswag) Lau. She attended Klemme Schools, participated in debate, was a member of the first girl's basketball team in 1922, and graduated in 1925. After graduation she assumed the responsibility of caring for her invalid mother and keeping house for her brothers, George and Erwin. Throughout the years many relatives enjoyed Sunday and holiday dinners in their home. Leona was the youngest child in a family of 13.
Leona was a member of the Klemme United Methodist Church, taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years, and was a camp counselor at Lake Okoboji Methodist Camp. She was a Charter member of the Woman's Society of Christian Service, and United Methodist Women and the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved to garden and had many beautiful flower beds. She participated in the Klemme Garden Club and won numerous blue ribbons at the flower shows. Leona also enjoyed fishing with her brothers, collecting stamps, reading books and traveling with relatives throughout the U.S.A., Canada and Mexico.
In the fall of 1986, Leona moved to the Prairie View Apartments in Garner and in the spring of 1987, she entered the Americana Healthcare Center in Mason City. After hospitalization on 1990, she transferred to Heritage Care Center in Mason City where she has been the past 3 years.
She is survived by 1 sister-in-law, Mrs. Lloyd Lau of Columbus, OH, 19 nieces and Nephews. Leona was preceded in death by her parents, 7 brothers, William, George, Wesley, Lloyd, Erwin and 2 infants, and 5 sisters, Lillie, Martha, Esther, Nellie and Mamie.
