Howard M. Wiles, 81, of Colorado Springs died Sunday in a nursing home. Mr. Wiles had been a research engineer in Waukesha, Wis. he retired in 1974 and moved to Colorado Springs in 1976. Funeral services are scheduled at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Sunrise Methodist Church, 2655 Briargate Blvd. Officiating will be the Rev. Ed Beck. There will be cremation. Mr. Wiles was born May 19, 1904 in Klemme, Iowa. He graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. Mr. Wiles invented a gasoline engine that measured the octane rating of gas now used worldwide. His original engine was placed in the Smithsonian Institution in 1981. Mr. Wiles was a trustee and member of the building committee of Sunrise United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Florence; a daughter, Marjorie McCormick; and a grandson. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sunrise United Methodist Church.
