Memoir of Mrs. Garland Hoffman

The community was wholly unprepared to receive the sad and shocking news of the sudden sad death of the subject of this memoir. As was still the tender morning hour of the day of her death, so was still the ever brightening morning hour of her life growing towards the radiance of the full orbed noonday when suddenly the thread that bound her to this life was snapped.

It was that wistful hour so full of hope and joy and anticipation when a brave woman enters motherhood. How she and hers had looked forward to and made plans for this hour, when suddenly all was brought to naught. And, while we are mute today and fail to understand we know that the all-wise Father doeth all things well. We know that sometime we shall understand.

Mrs. Lula Lora Newberger Hoffman was born on February 11, 1902 in Ripley Township, Butler County Iowa. She was the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lew Newberger and came with them in the spring of 1915 to make their home in the vicinity of Klemme. Here it was that she grew to beautiful womanhood, attending school to do her grade work and then entered the Klemme High School where she finished the eleventh grade. She graduated an efficient student from the Garner H. S. having qualified to teach, she taught with visible success after leaving school.

On March 8, 1921, she was married to Mr. Garland Hoffman. They seemed especially suited to each other and their married life was very happy and companionable only to be abruptly terminated after a few short years. She was a lover of music, and beside having a cheerful disposition, she brought cheer wherever she was.

She is survived by her grief stricken companion, her parents, by three brothers and two sisters, as well as by her grandparents. She also leaves a host of friends who mourn her untimely death.

She died on Sept. 20, 1924, at the age of 22 years, 7 months and 9 days. Funeral services were held in the Klemme Methodist Church conducted by the pastor, Rev. Gauger. Interment was made in the Klemme cemetery.
