Mary Ann (Freese) Grieser, 85, a longtime resident of Leawood, [Missouri] passed away peacefully on June 12, 2018. A funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, Aug. 6, at 10:30 a.m., at Cure of Ars Catholic Church in Leawood. A reception will follow at the church and burial at Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
Mary Ann was born on Feb. 21, 1933, in Doon, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur Carl Freese and DeVere Sophia (Sellen) Freese. She graduated high school in Clarion, Iowa, and earned a bachelor's degree in home economics from Iowa State University. As she began her career as a county extension agent in Mason City, Iowa, she met her future husband, Carl Frederick Grieser, a young attorney, who predeceased her in 1983. They married Oct. 13, 1956, in Sioux Falls, S.D. Mary Ann and Carl had two children -- Susan Marie and Daniel John. Carl's career took the family to Illinois and Nebraska, where Mary Ann earned a master's degree at the University of Nebraska in human development. She went on to teach nursing students in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and at Avila University before becoming a residential real estate agent, a profession she pursued for nearly 30 years. Mary Ann was loved and treasured by her many friends and family, who will miss her and remember her kindness, elegance, generosity and sympathy for others, a quality that inspired her to become active in grief support at both Cure of Ars and in her beloved winter getaway in Stuart, Fla. Mary Ann loved to travel and took many memorable family vacations and trips here and abroad over the years. She appreciated fine art and classical music as an accomplished pianist herself and supporter of the Kansas City Symphony. She also had a soft spot for her cherished Boston terriers.
Mary Ann is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Tim Roush, of Kansas City, Mo., son, Daniel, of Westminster Colo., and grandchildren Bradley, Amy and Cameron Grieser, Jan and Craig Roush and Emily Randolph. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, John and William Freese. The family would especially like to thank the caring and compassionate staff in memory care at Bickford Mission Springs and Great Lakes Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
