1 July 1878 ---- 26 September 1954

Rev. John Voortman, 77-year old retired minister of Grand Rapids, Mich., passed away very suddenly on Sunday following a heart attack. Death came while he was at Cincinnati, Ohio, where he had gone to attend the ordination services of his son, Cyburn, who entered the ministry. The father was invited to come to the platform to speak a few words and then suffered the heart attack from which he did not recover.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon, Sept. 30, at Grand Rapids, Mich. Rev. Voortman was well known in this vicinity as he held pastorates at Middleburg and Sheldon a number of years ago. He was first married to Carrie Heynen of Sioux Center, who preceded him in death and left him a widower with two small daughters. He was then married to Annie De Vries, who became the mother of four children and then also preceded him in death. Later he was married again and she now survives him with two children. He is further survived by a brother, Evert Voortman of Sioux Center and a sister, Mrs. Teunis Overman of Rock Rapids. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Wm. Rensink of Sioux Center, and also by a sister who died in the Netherlands.
