April 17, 1924 ---- June 26, 2018

Eugene Raymond Abels, the son of Ralph and Trena (Ohden) Abels, was born on April 17, 1924 in rural Hamilton County, North of Ellsworth, Iowa. His primary education was in one room country schools and he graduated from Corwith High School in 1941.

Gene entered the United States Air Force during WW II. He was the radar operator on a B-29 Bomber, based in the South Pacific on Tinian Island. Following his honorable discharge from the service he returned home to Iowa and on the evening of his return home met Dorothy May Losh who became the love of his life. It was on November 8, 1947 that Gene and Dorothy were united in marriage in the Presbyterian Church in Clarion, Iowa. They made their home and farmed near Kanawha, Iowa. During the year of 1962 the family moved to Eagle Grove, Iowa.

God blessed Gene and Dorothy with four children. Steven, Paul, Patricia and Philip. To their children nine grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren have been born.

Gene's faith in Christ has always been very important to him. He was a member of the Wright Christian Reformed Church of rural Kanawha, Iowa. During the War, he attended chapels on the bases where he was stationed. When the family moved to Eagle Grove, they became members of Samuel Evangelical Lutheran Church of Eagle Grove. As his family grew he served his Lord being a member of the church council and as a Sunday School teacher.

Working for Gene found him successful both in farming and then in the insurance business – working for Farm Bureau from 1962-1984. He enjoyed making greeting cards that blessed many family members and friends over the years.

Gene is survived by his four children: Steven (Maureen) Abels, Paul Abels, Patricia Abels-Christopher, Philip (Patty) Abels; nine grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; brother, Dirk Abels and sisters, Dorothy Berleen and Rosemond Abels.

Gene passed away on Tuesday, June 26, 2018, at the Paula Baber Hospice Home in Fort Dodge, at the age of 94 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife and partner for 70 years, Dorothy Losh Abels; his two brothers Earnest and Ralph Abels; his brother-in-law Richard Berleen; his sisters-in-law Doris Dagett Abels and Esther Abels; his daughter-in-law Lynnda Sorenson Abels and his son-in-law Larry Christopher.
