Phyllis Jean Kirkwood was born in Marshalltown, IA, on December 12, 1929. Her parents were William and Helen (Bielefeld) Kirkwood. As a young girl she moved to Klemme, IA, where was she grew up and attended Klemme Schools, graduating from Klemme High School. She was raised by her grandma and baptized in Klemme in her childhood. Phyllis was united in marriage to Seabo Lamfers in 1948 and their union was blessed with 6 sons: Wayne, Steven, David, Vern, Gary, and James; and a daughter, Helen. Seabo preceded Phyllis in death following a battle with Leukemia on Jan. 23, 1970. Phyllis later married Harry Wenig on February 11, 1972, in South Dakota and the two enjoyed many years together as a new couple raising their children and watching their families expand with the blessings of grandchildren. A favorite excursion for her and Harry to go out to a venue featuring the band Hal's Ramblers and dance the night away. Harry passed away on November 12, 2002 at age 100.

Phyllis continued to enjoy the support of family and good friends, along with the happenings and journeys that life brought her way. Unfortunate that she was born with visual impairment from her birth, Phyllis still worked hard to fulfill life to its fullest despite this set back for most people. In addition to being a lifelong homemaker, loving wife, nurturing mom and doting grandma, she had worked for a time at Lynn's Lounge (today's Cattleman's) in Belmond. She also operated her own thrift shop in downtown Belmond for a time, something that fit right into her love for attending flea markets, auctions, antiquing. Phyllis loved to build collections and had and extensive cache if more than 2700 Avon bottles, among other collectibles and memorabilia.

Phyllis loved taking trips and vacations to visit family and friends. She loved to play cards and was very competitive in spirit. She was a long time member of the Over 60's card club. Phyllis even gave cross stitch a try despite her vision issues. She loved anything involving family and was know to keep the pulse of the happenings about town with her scanner on 24/7. Phyllis had a great memory, loved genealogy, story telling, family history, and knew how everyone was related. She will be remembered for her straightforward personality, wit, and innate sense of humor.

Phyllis is survived by her sons and daughter and their children: son, Wayne (Petra) Lamfers, Belmond, IA, Rondi, Rob, Ashley, and Austin; son Steven (Patricia) Lamfers, Loveland, CO, and their children Michael and Jeffery; David (Marie) Lamfers, Slidell, Louisiana, and their children Jason, Jamie, and Cory; Vern (Connie) Lamfers, Garner, IA, and their children Elizabeth, Melinda, and Gene; a son, James B.
