Ruth Elizabeth Dorr was born May 6, 1911, in Belmond, Iowa, to Lawrence and Elizabeth Dorr. She grew up in Wright County graduating from school with a normal training certificate in Clarion. She taught grade school in Grant Township for two years. On June 2, 1931, she married Elwood L. Gray. They farmed northeast of Eagle Grove for 28 years and raised their family of nine children there. In December of 1958, the couple retired from farming and moved to Eagle Grove. She worked at Forbes Appliance for ten years and later worked for her grandson, Tom Cooper, at Cooper's Carpeting for a number of years before she retired. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church where she was a lay distributor and involved in Catholic Daughters, guild, choir, parish council, and the altar society.

Ruth E. Gray died Friday, January 30, 1998, at her home at the age of 76. Survivors include daughters, Betty McCart and Phyllis Cooper, Eagle Grove, Teresa Dodd, Kansas City, Roselee Sandvig, Overland Park, Kan., Paula Eck, Cedar Falls, and Lana Nail, Iowa Falls; and two sons, William Gray, Fort Madison, and Ron Gray, Kent, Ohio; 40 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and one sister, Pauline Colter, Mercer Island, Wash. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elwood L. Gray; one son, Robert Charles Gray; great granddaughter, Nichole Heidebreder; two brothers, Charles Dorr and Wilbur Dorr; and two sisters, Sister Mary Olivia and Mary Jean Kepros.

Funeral services were held Monday, February 2, 1998, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove with Father Wayne Droessler officiating. Burial was held in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Eagle Grove. Willim Funeral Home of Eagle Grove was in charge of arrangements.
