6 January 1866 ---- 28 November 1931

The funeral of the late Father Nolan who died at Osage Saturday, Nov. 28, was held Wednesday morning at Sacred Heart church at 10 o'clock. The love and esteem in which Father Nolan was held in this community was never more evidenced than by the large turnout of our citizens to pay a final tribute to his memory at the Wednesday service. Protestant as well as Catholic felt a keen personal loss in his passing. Equally high was he held in the esteem of his fellow workers. Brother priests came to attend the funeral from all over the state. He had been a resident of this community for twenty years and considered himself
a part of this community. No further proof of this statement is needed than the fact that he was buried in Calvary cemetery in accordance with his often repeated wishes. Business houses were closed during the services and the attendance was the largest of any funeral held here in years. Cars lined both sides of streets in the blocks surrounding the church. A public address system was installed in order that those who could not gain admittance to the main body of the church might hear the service and the sermon in the chapel in the basement.

Father Nolan had hosts of friends and few, if any, real enemies. He was considered by his superiors as a competent pastor, a successful leader and executive in his parish. The members of his congregation regarded him most highly and realize that in his passing they have sustained an irrevocable loss. But there is comfort in the recollection on the part of all of us that he was with us so many years. The best and most useful years of his life were devoted unselfishly to the interests of his church and his community. He has been called to his reward and we all have a firm and abiding faith in the belief that this reward is that which he would have selected for himself.

Father Nolan, 65, died at the home of Father J. Martin at Osage, Saturday Nov. 28 at 1:30 o'clock p. m. He had gone to Osage to spend Thanksgiving and it was while seated at the dinner table, just as he was about to carve the turkey, that he felt a stroke of paralysis coming on.

“You will have to do the carving for me” he remarked to Father Martin, and got up and left the table and collapsed when he had taken a few steps. He soon became unconscious and passed onto his reward 48 hours later.

Father Nolan was born In Ireland, Jan. 6. 1866, in the city of Duagh, County Kerry, Ireland. After finishing his common school education, he entered Carlo College, a seminary for missions, and there he was ordained for the priesthood, June 21, 1892. He left almost immediately for America, going directly to Dubuque. He was appointed parish assistant to Father Francis Dunn at Elma, Iowa, where he served one year. Then he was appointed to full charge of the parish at Cecelia, Iowa, where he served 19 years. He came to Eagle Grove, April 7, 1912, succeeding Father O'Brien.
